2016 OHSAA Track & Field State Championships Recaps

Cleveland St. Ignatius, Cincinnati Withrow Win Second OHSAA Div. I State Track & Field Titles
COLUMBUS, Ohio � Cleveland St. Ignatius won the Division I boys track and field state championship and Cincinnati Withrow won the Division I girls state title at the 2016 OHSAA boys and girls state track and field tournament at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at The Ohio State University on Saturday.

With six podium finishes, including two relay victories, St. Ignatius earned its second state track and field title and first since 2001. St. Ignatius senior James Norris finished third in the 100M dash (11.00) and was a member of the winning 4x100M relay team. Seniors Luke Wagner and Tom Sullivan competed in a closely-packed 1600M where only 69 hundredths of a second separated the second-place and fifth-place finishers. Wagner finished third (4:12.70) while Sullivan placed fifth (4:13.11). Senior Collin Crutchman placed second in the 800M run (153.03) behind Sylvania Southview senior Frank Hayes, who posted a Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium record time of 1:49.16, topping the previous record set by Cory Leslie of Sandusky Perkins in 2008 (1:50.77).

The Wildcats won both the 4x800M (7:39.23) and 4x100M (41.48) relays. St. Ignatius� final podium appearance came in the 3200M run as junior C.J. Ambrosio placed second (9:01.78). Watkins Memorial senior Andrew Jordan won the event with a time of 8:54.96, breaking the previous Division I state, meet and Owens Memorial Stadium record set by Tsehaye Hiluf of Reynoldsburg in 2012 (8:55.04).


Cincinnati Withrow made eight podium appearances, including a first-place appearance in the 4x100M relay (46.58) and in the 300M Intermediate Hurdles as sophom*ore J�Alyiea Smith ran a winning time of 42.44. Smith also earned second place in the 100M Hurdles (14.32), third in High Jump (five feet seven inches) and was part of Withrow�s second-place 4x400M relay team (3:46.48). Withrow finished second in the 4x200M relay (1:38.54) and first in the 4x100M relay (46.58). Junior Doneasha Brewer placed second in the 200M dash (24.40) and junior Niyah Carpenter earned a second-place finish in Long Jump (18 feet � inches).


Dublin Coffman sophom*ore Abby Steiner broke the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium record in the 100M dash (11.60), topping the previous record set in 2011 by Destinee Gause of Reynoldsburg (11.63).

In the seated athlete division, Massillon Washington senior Zion Clark won the 100M dash (17.82) and 400M (1:03.60). New Albany sophom*ore Michael Fenster won the 800M (2:16.49) and Bowling Green freshman Eric Rine won the shot put (16 feet 10 � inches).

Greenfield McClain junior Kaylee Hurley won the girls 400M (1:21.22), 800M (3:07.21) and shot put (18 feet 4 � inches). Wooster Triway sophom*ore Sammy Rhodes won the 100M dash (23.41).St. Clairsville Wins First Boys Track & Field State Championship in School History; Findlay Liberty-Benton Wins Second State Title
COLUMBUSk, Ohio � St. Clairsville won its first Division II boys track and field state championship and Findlay Liberty-Benton won its second Division II girls state title at the 2016 OHSAA boys and girls state track and field tournament at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at The Ohio State University on Saturday.

St. Clairsville finished fourth in the 4x100M relay (43.10). Junior Malachi Mellema won the 110M Hurdles (14.37) and placed second in the 300M Intermediate Hurdles (38.14), and Junior Jordan Vincent placed first in Long Jump with a winning jump of 22 feet 1 � inches. St. Clairsville tallied 33 points, edging out runner-up Lexington who finished with 31.

Chagrin Falls senior Joseph Bistritz ran a Division II state, meet and Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium record in the 1600M run (4:05.62) and Dayton Stivers senior broke the meet and stadium record in the 400M (46.61).
Findlay Liberty-Benton cruised to victory on Saturday, totaling 52 points with seven podium finishes. Liberty-Benton senior and reigning 100M and 200M champion Michaela Butler defended her titles, winning the 100M dash (11.98) and 200M dash (24.65). Liberty-Benton finished second in the 4x800M relay (9:19.74). Junior Leah Recker, who participated in the 4x800M relay, claimed second place in the open 800M run (2:11.95). Sophom*ore Lindsey Bishop earned second place in High Jump (five feet six inches) and fourth place in Long Jump (17 feet 9 � inches), and sophom*ore Emma Swisher finished sixth in Pole Vault (10 feet six inches).
Steubenville finished in second place in the team standings with 25 total points, and Pepper Pike Orange senior set the division II state and meet 100M Hurdles record in the preliminary race on Friday (13.92).
Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas Wins Boys and Girls Div. III State Track & Field Titles, Girls Win Second-Consecutive Championship
COLUMBUS, Ohio � Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas captured the Division III boys and girls track and field state championship on Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at The Ohio State University, marking the first time in Division III track and field history and fourth time overall that the same school won both the boys and girls state track and field championship in the same year. It is the first boys track state championship for St. Thomas Aquinas and the second girls title as they defended their crown from a year ago.


On the boys side, St. Thomas Aquinas scored 36 points. Aquinas made the podium in five different events, including two first place finishes in the 4x800M relay (7:56.57) and in the 1600M run as senior Jacob Caniford posted a winning time of 4:14.34. Junior Andrew George placed fourth in the 100M dash (11.043) and senior Jacob Paul finished third in the 800M run (1:56.11). Aquinas� 4x200M team placed fourth (1:30.53).
Gahanna Columbus Academy placed second in the boys team standings with 35 points.

The girls of St. Thomas Aquinas made the podium seven times on Saturday, including five first place finishes, for a total of 60 points. The 4x800M relay team broke the Division II state and meet record � a record set by Aquinas in 2014 � with a winning time of 9:05.84. Senior Athena Welsh won the 1600M run (4:49.06) and 3200M run (10:56.80), junior Kalee Soehnlen won the 800M run (2:10.67) and the 4x200M relay team posted a winning time of 1:44.88. Senior Rachael Adams finished fourth in the 200M dash (25.62) and the 4x400M relay team placed fourth (4:00.94).

Lore City Buckeye Trail sophom*ore Kylie Cutlip ran a Division III state record 42.37 in the preliminary round of the 300M intermediate hurdles on Friday, only to break that record on Saturday after running a 42.08 in the finals.
Ottoville junior Brooke Mangas cleared a division III state record and meet record in high jump (five feet 10 inches) and Dayton Miami Valley School senior Taylor Middleton set a meet record in long jump (18 feet 11 � inches).
